Per Bob Barr: Obama/McCain not on TX ballot !!
Thu Aug 28, 2008 at 02:16:17 AM PDT
Bob Barr, for Libertarian Party, sent out a Press Release August 27, 2008 stating that Obama & McCain both missed the August 26th filing deadline in Texas, so that Barr, will be the ONLY candidate for President on the Texas Ballot.
McCain's Healthcare Plan
Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 07:06:02 PM PDT
In today's Dallas Morning News there was a front page story describing the plight of the many Texans without health care coverage. Between the years of disasterous (non)leadership provided by George Bush and the continuing misgovernance by his republican successor, Bill Perry, Texas once again leads the nation with the highest percentage of residents without health care insurance, according to the US Census Bureau. Almost 25% were uninsured in 2006 and 2007.
As might be expected, the republicans found a unique way to spin these numbers and their spokesperson is none other than an individual who help McCain put together his healthcare policy... See below the fold.
Obama and McCain both miss filing deadline in Texas?
Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 04:54:53 PM PDT
I just saw this news on another site, but I don't know what to make of it:
http://westernstandard.blogs.com/...
It seems only Bob Barr is actually on the ballot for President, and the filing deadline is gone. Barr himself put out a press release saying as much.
I know this is a sparse diary, but I'm not sure what else I can say - anyone know what the deal is?
Potential Threat of Hurricane Gustav (UPDATED)
Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 06:25:22 AM PDT
Folks, this is not a typical DailyKos diary. This is politics free. No, I'm not trying to stir up memories of Katrina and Brownie and yet another fine example of Republican mismanagement due to nepotism and using the system as an old boys network. No... I'm a meteorologist working as a forecaster responsible for tracking tropical cyclones. So, I wanted to share the latest info on the threat of Gustav with my fellow Kossacks.
My Trip to the DMV and Post Katrina Voting Map Changes
Tue Aug 26, 2008 at 02:03:19 AM PDT
I registered to vote today!
I live in one of the racist red state on the planet but I will vote early and often for Obama, it's the Chicago way.
Tom Delay may get off on a technicality
Mon Aug 25, 2008 at 08:50:40 AM PDT
God, this is appalling. Because Tom Delay was indicted under a law referring to cash, and his money laundering all involved checks, an appelate court has ruled that the charges against him should be dropped.
Texas state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte!!!!!!
Mon Aug 25, 2008 at 06:43:37 AM PDT
Well I live to write another hastily written diary with bad grammer and mispellings. But still, I wuz listening to CSPAN and reading my bloggies. When I looked up to see the name of the person speaking and it was
Texas state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte!
I was gobsmacked......
This woman was a pharmacist on Culebra on the west side of San Antonio (in the Edgewood school district area). Every Monday I walked past a pharmacy on my way to the mobile library trailer to "time travel" back and forth through my addiction to reading. She took over that pharmacy after I grew up and moved away. My mom and Dad got to know her as she was their pharmacist for many years. They think the world of her.
And now, she is the co-chair of the Denver convention!
Wow, that is really cool to me.
Texas GOP Gets Racially Charged On Obama.
Sun Aug 24, 2008 at 09:33:30 PM PDT
I don't feel a need to write any further. The ad they put out speaks for itself.
so who is Chet Edwards - is he Obamas pic?!
Fri Aug 22, 2008 at 12:23:18 PM PDT
Some buzz now on internet about Congressman Chet Edwards being (D-TX) Obama's VP pick? Nancy Pelosi seems to favor him. The night the VP is presented at the convention is themed on veterans issues, and Edwards fits this theme like a glove.
The Trial of Jeff Wood
Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 01:51:31 PM PDT
By Christopher Hill, State Strategies Coordinator, ACLU Capital Punishment Project
In Franz Kafka’s novel, The Trial, the main character is prosecuted and executed for an unnamed crime. We like to think that this kind of absurd surrealism only happens in literature. But something similarly absurd is occurring in the U.S. death penalty system.
Texas planned to execute Jeffery Wood tonight for murder even though he did not kill anyone nor did he intend that anyone be killed. He was not even in the building when the person he was convicted of killing was murdered. The fact that a judge has stayed his execution for last-minute assessment of his mental competency doesn't detract from the absurdity that he's still on death row.
Save Jeff Wood - Take Action
Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 08:54:37 AM PDT
Jeff Wood is scheduled to be executed today at 6:00 pm for a murder he did not commit. His only hope is clemency from Texas Governor Rick Perry. You can e-mail Gov. Perry and sign a petition by going to the following site:

We Teach Abstinence in Texas
Wed Aug 20, 2008 at 08:52:40 PM PDT
The State of Texas has adopted an abstinence-only approach to sex education. My state has put all of their eggs into one basket when it comes to the prevention of teen pregnancy and STDs; it's a good thing abstinence-only sex education programs work!
Oh, wait...that's right, they are an abysmal failure!
Texas Set to Execute Non-Killer on Thursday
Wed Aug 20, 2008 at 07:08:09 PM PDT
Thursday, August 21, Texas is set to execute Jeff Wood even though he did not kill anyone. The person who actually killed the victim has already been executed by Texas. Yesterday, the Board of Pardons and Paroles voted against clemency for Wood, but Governor Perry can still stop this execution by issuing a 30 day stay of execution.
Why I'm voting for John Cornyn and You Should Too
Mon Aug 18, 2008 at 03:14:10 PM PDT
John Cornyn represents everything big. Big Business, big oil and most importantly himself Big John.
If you like Big - Big John is your man.
Big John also likes big corruption. Karl Rove the Big Bad Evil Genius held a fundraiser for him today in El Paso
Oh there is a big connection between Jack Abramoff, Ralph Reed and Big John.
This guy is just big time.
Liveblog: Camp Obama in Austin, TX (Key Update!)
Sat Aug 16, 2008 at 07:44:10 AM PDT
Welcome back to Austin, TX for the very first Camp Obama of the general election cycle! There are also sessions in Los Angeles today, and in New York City next weekend. The focus of this Camp Obama is to train people who can commit 5 weeks of their time to solid volunteering. These folks will become leaders wherever they go, and some of them might work with all of you when you find your way into an Obama campaign office this election cycle. It’s really exciting to be part of this grassroots organizing. I’m looking forward to hearing about what brings these folks in to participate.
Join us in Austin below the jump for photos and session recaps, to be updated throughout the weekend.
Important: There are Camp Obamas scheduled next weekend for Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio. More info below!
Historic: Texas Re-Examining a Wrongful Execution
Fri Aug 15, 2008 at 03:25:33 PM PDT
For the first time in history, a state is reviewing whether it executed an innocent man.
A Texas panel will investigate whether a man executed for setting a fire that killed his three daughters actually started the blaze.
The Texas Forensic Science Commission agreed Friday to review conclusions that Cameron Todd Willingham set the fire in 1991. He was executed in 2004.
...
The Innocence Project, a legal group that works to overturn wrongful convictions, says experts in a report it commissioned concluded the fire was not intentionally set.
You can read an extensive account I wrote of the case of Cameron Todd Willingham, convicted and executed for arson and murder based on junk science, here. But a brief synopsis of the case, and a discussion of today's events, lay below the fold.
Rick Noriega: No Buckskin Jacket, But A Lot of Smarts
Fri Aug 15, 2008 at 02:49:08 PM PDT
I just had the pleasure of talking to Democratic candidate Rick Noriega at a "meet and greet" in Weatherford, Texas an hour ago.
Noriega is going up agin' Senator "Big Bad John" Cornyn in November. I was pretty impressed by the guy. He's articulate, knowledgeable, he's got a great service record and he knows just how bad the situation is in Texas, especially when it comes to energy, education, health care and immigration reform. He also has some solid ideas on how to fix things. I think if he gets some support, he might have a real shot.
So if you're a Texan who's tired of the black hole Perry, Cornyn and Hutchinson have dragged us into, go to Noriega's website (www.ricknoriega.com) and give him some support. (And maybe a little cash.) And don't worry....I've already emailed his campaign and told them they need a better header shot of their candidate!
Melancon (D for TX 4) Let's Talk Energy Now
Tue Aug 12, 2008 at 08:44:55 AM PDT
A competitive energy market is the key to driving down consumer prices. Right now big oil has a monopoly. We can take steps now to fix this problem. That’s why I welcome the new bipartisan energy compromise. The New Energy Reform Act of 2008 includes significant investments in alternative-fuel vehicles; repeals tax breaks for big oil, and opens new areas to offshore drilling. We have to break the gridlock in Congress. American families and small businesses need an energy policy that works for us.
